Tips for a good question

The best questions are short, to the point and straight to the specific issue. Start with "what" or "why" rather than "do you" or "are you" - because these last two usually result in 'yes' or 'no' answers that provide little insight into the lawmaker's position or thinking. Browse through the questions others ask to see which sorts of questions elicit the best answers and get the most votes.

Tips for a good headline

Headlines should be short, interesting and to the point. Take a moment and think how best to get the Ask Your Lawmaker community voting for your question. What is your question about? What are the fewest words you can use to express its essence? What makes it an interesting question? Say you're asking a Senator the question "Why did you vote 'no' on immigration reform?," the headline might be "Voted no on immigration reform." Or, if you're asking one of your Representatives "Do you believe the U.S. should make its industry reduce carbon emissions even if other countries don't?," the headline might be "Controlling carbon emissions." Good, tight headlines like this are the "hooks" that bring more eyeballs into your question, get a higher vote count, and ensure it will get an answer.
