Congressional Intrusion In School Cafeterias

“Why is Congress so insistent about reaching into the schools and picking the foods that children can eat? Is this really the job of the federal government?” — Lynne Weymouth, Hinsdale, IL

“Fully a quarter of all Americans today are obese and it's not just that they turned out to be adults and got to be overweight. In many cases, they developed bad habits when they were very young and those habits haven't gotten any better as they've gotten older. We spend way more for health care than any other nation in the world and one of the reasons is that we are so overweight. We want to make sure that when kids come to school and participate in the school breakfast program they eat healthy food and not the kind of food that I've seen served in too many schools. The idea is to provide guidelines from the federal government; we're not going to be picking out the food in the schools but we're going to make sure that the guidelines are such that we end up with kids that are going to be healthier, kids less likely to be overweight when they're young and, hopefully, less likely to be overweight or obese later on.”
