Consensual Sex Between Teens

“If a Victim of a sex offender doesn't feel like a victim then why waste valuable time and money placing the offender on the registry?” — jody franceschina, Delphi, IN

We’re a nation of laws and not of men - this has been stated by leaders throughout the last two, three centuries. Since we’re a nation of laws we have to abide by the law. And if somebody has even consensual sex with somebody who’s under the age of consent then they have to be held accountable according to the law. And if you want to change the law then you need to do that through the legislative process. But let’s say somebody’s 15, and a person 20 has sexual relations with them. The person who’s 15 is below the age of consent legally and so the person who’s over the age of consent has the responsibility to make sure that they don’t break the law.

The big question there is, if somebody’s 15 years old and they’re a bright person, are they capable, according to the law, to make that determination. And if they say, “Well I don’t want you to hold him accountable because I consented and all that sort of thing. Why should he be put on the register?” The law is very specific and if the law says that you have to live by the law. Many times people think that the law should be changed. In my particular case, I think if somebody’s under the age of consent that you should be held accountable. If you’re gonna go out with somebody that’s under the age of consent you’d better think twice before you have sexual relations with them.
