Why has nothing been done to legalize marijuana? If we would legalize and tax marijuana Americans would pay hundreds of millions of dollars every year. By allowing farmers to grow Hemp there would be another source for food, clothing, fuel, paper and building materials. What is your reasoning for keeping a major cash crop illegal?

A lot of us have seen firsthand, or at least secondarily, the destruction of a community caused by drugs. And you might say that marijuana’s an exception to all those other drugs, but most of us aren’t thoroughly convinced of that. We’ve seen instances personally, as well as every study has shown that it can be a gateway drug. And while you may sit there and say ‘jeeze, well it’s similar to alcohol,’ the reality is that it can lead to more destructive drugs. And once you start down legalizing marijuana, then how about cocaine?

Google recently hired goats to cut the grass at their development headquarters. Is there any chance that Congress would consider make the switch to greener goat powered lawn care? What are some of the things that your committee has done to make the Capitol more energy efficient?

Okay I just happen to sit on the committee called the Legislative Branch and we have all the staff looking at all the buildings in terms of the lower hanging fruits that we can do right away, and that would be things like lighting, stuff like that. The other thing is looking at a long term building by building project, where they’ll come back and give us a plan. That’s going to take a little longer.

What did the automakers do with the last ten years of revenue that they made? Shouldn't they have had company money to back themselves up in case sales dropped, excluding the current economic crisis?

I think this is a very legitimate question. They did have good years and bad years during that period of time. Overall they’ve had mediocre sales in the last ten years. But I do think it would be their responsibility to look down the road, keep a rainy day fund, but also look at some of the contracts and long term commitments they were making, both lease commitments and management commitments and union contracts. Because it would appear to me that they were heading towards a brick wall and needed to change some things in Detroit.

Well, they had been. They’d been part of a restructuring process. There had been plant closings throughout Michigan, throughout the Midwest, throughout America, such as my district. It was very painful. But what happened eventually was when the credit crisis hit you had an inability to move cars off the lot, which under girds any car company. For example, Toyota, because of the financial crisis, asked for a $2 billion loan from the Japanese government. So this was not simply limited to domestic automakers.

With the proposed stimulus package, Congress and the Administration have an opportunity to jump start the new green economy. Earth Day Network is pushing for funds for green schools and more investment in renewables. Which of those environmentally and economically responsible measures do you think will be in the final bill?
Asked by: Raquel Garcia from Washington, DC. Received 26 Votes.

Seems to me that the stimulus bill ought to provide funding in the energy area particularly, but in other infrastructure matters as well, that will stimulate jobs immediately and help us long term deal with other problems whether its roads or bridges or schools or moving away from our dependence on foreign oil.
