Sen. Thomas R. Carper's Profile

Thomas Carper was born in West Virginia and spent his child hood in Virginia. He says he came to love Delaware while he was in the Navy. In 1991 he retired from the Navy reserves after reaching the rank of captain. In 1976 he began the first of three terms as Delaware's state treasurer. In 1982 he was elected to the U.S. House and then served two terms as governor of the state. In 2001 he was elected to serve Delaware in the U.S. Senate. Official Biography
