When considering legislation, how do you balance the needs of your constituents with the need to pass legislation that is also good for the whole country? Do you consistently favor one over the other, or do you approach things issue by issues, law by law?

This certainly seems like a good time to fund national and community service programs. What are you doing to ensure that such programs receive the funding they need?

Well I think we just passed the National Service Bill, expanding Americorps – that’s gonna have a significant price tag, but it’s an investment. For every dollar we spend on national service programs the country gets back multiples of that. It appeals to the auditor in me in terms of cost benefit. So you’re gonna see, this is one of the areas where we are gonna see a nudging up of the federal budget in that area because we all know we get a great return on that.
