Question:

CPSIA was passed to keep American toys safe. This is a good thing. Unfortunately, legislation makes it prohibitively expensive for small businesses that hand craft toys to pass the approval process. What can we do to ensure that products sold in the US are safe while not hurting small businesses that make all of their products in the US?

Answer from: U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME)

“Well that is obviously is a concern and we should find ways in which to help them. When it is something that uniquely affects small businesses that means they are not in a position to achieve those standards we’ve learned that with standards passed several years ago with respect to lead content and so there have got to be ways in which we can assist them and make the process more effective and to address that from that standpoint because it does concern me as a ranking member of the small business committee so I understand some of those issues and we’ve got to figure out a way in which to help them through that process because small business is so crucial to job creation here but at the same token addressing the safety questions that develop.”
