Over withhold on your taxes & you can get an interest free refund and that's like giving the government an interest free loan. Why, if you under withhold, pay up any balance due when you file on time-- you will still be charged interest on the amount under withheld? Note, Maryland's interest rate is about twice that of the IRS rate-- why? More

What will you do to reform the redistricting system in this country, which has led to most seats in Congress being so safe that even a major shift in public opinion won't be reflected in an election. More

Would you be willing to put limits on usurious rates being charged by credit card companies in order to stimulate consumer spending?
Asked by: Kurt Christensen from Westminster, MD. Received 1 Vote.

We’ve got to address the problem with debt in this country. The government has to stop running itself on a credit card and Americans need to get out of debt. And the exorbitant interest rates that are charged on these credit cards, I’d love to address because there comes a point where you got to say, at what point does it become loan sharking and the other part a fair and equitable reasonable amount of money to expect a return on the borrowed money, so anything we can do to help people get out of debt in this country should be a priority.

Who authorized the departure of Saudi Nationals (including the Bin Laden family) when the U.S. airspace was otherwise closed?
Asked by: Kurt Christensen from Westminster, MD. Received 17 Votes.

I don’t know the answer to that. I was not in Congress at the time that that happened and I don’t know that anybody did. I don’t know how to answer that question.

Before his execution, Saddam Hussein was doing a lot of writing. What ever became of those manuscripts? When will the translated text be provided to the American people?

That's a great question. I don't know the answer but I'd like to find out myself. That's a great question. The thing is he may have just been spewing poison and bitterness but it would be interesting to know what he had to say. If he had any remorse for all the people that had been killed and raped and maimed and tortured on his watch. But that would be a good question and I'll try to find that out. That's a good question.

Would McCain try to reinstitute the draft if there are not enough volunteers for Iraq? Is military victory in Iraq that important to US security?
Asked by: Carolyn B. from Hyattsville, MD. Received 8 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Sen. John W. Warner (R-VA)
First I was secretary of the navy during the period of time that this country laid the foundation, 1973, 74, to eliminate the draft. And I know the reasons why we eliminated the draft. We took the chance as a nation that we could raise sufficient troops on the all volunteer concept and that has worked and worked far better than any of us ever thought. And today wherever we are in the world defending freedom it is people in uniform who are there because they raised their hand and they volunteered.

I think it’s time to bring troops home from Iraq and not institute the draft.

The DSCOVR satellite can answer critical questions about global warming, including whether or not it's a fantasy. It has been built and paid for but it's been sitting in a Marlyand warehouse for years. There are no plans to launch it,even though both France and Ukraine have offered to do so for free. NASA won't say why. Can you find out?
Asked by: Chris D. from Columbia, MD. Received 30 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL)
Yeah, the Deep Space Climate Observatory is a NASA satellite that was originally proposed by then Vice President Al Gore. One of the purposes was to provide a continuous picture of the earth from 1.5 km away in space. Critics have argued that the satellite would beam, essentially, an overpriced screen saver of earth that was not the best use of NASA dollars that could be spent on perhaps more pressing matters like monitoring the climate and life sciences etc.

The Florida primary was moved forward as part of a referendum to standardize on optical scan voting machines. Would you care to comment on how that referendum happened to change the date of the Florida primary... and disenfranchise the Florida voters?
Asked by: Kurt Christensen from Westminster, MD. Received 14 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL)
Well, first I don’t think it was just that referendum caused the change. I believe the state legislature on the House side or the Speaker of the House proffered a motion that came over to the Senate, and the Democrats in the Senate wanted a paper trail measure added to it with reference to the change of the date. So the change of the date took place inside the legislature with the Governor’s approval and not on a state-wide referendum.

Why has Congress not acted to open the Federal employee health care system up to private individuals and businesses. This was a promise the Democrats made when they took Congress in 2006. It would cost us nothing to do this, and it would provide a means for individuals and employers to obtain health care insurance at reasonable rates.
Asked by: David Stoddard from Silver Spring, MD. Received 20 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR)
What Americans want is to make sure they have choices like their Members of Congress have. Members of Congress have private health care choices. And with the Healthy Americans Act we have now been able to get a significant group of senators, both Republicans and Democrats, to show that for the amount of money that’s being spent on health care today, according to the budget experts, it’s possible for all Americans to have similar choices.
